Five clear signs a tree needs to come down
- More than 30% dead wood in the canopy
- Visible cracks in the main trunk
- Severe lean that has developed recently
- Fungal brackets at the base (root rot)
- Hollow trunk larger than a third of the diameter
Three common myths
- "If it drops branches, it must go." Healthy trees self-prune.
- "If roots are visible, it's dying." Many indigenous species are surface-rooted by nature.
- "If it's leaning, it'll fall." A long-standing lean is usually stable.
